Purpose. To determine the degree of occupational risks in terms of respiratory diseases (pneumoconioses) of miners while using dust respirators. Methodology. The approach described in DSTU-P OHSAS 18001:2006 "Systems to control occupational safety and health. Requirements" has been used to assess occupational risks. Findings. It has been determined that the area of safe use for filtering half-masks in the context of coal mines should be limited by 5 MAC. Calculation of the risk level while applying Risk score method has demonstrated that in terms of coal dust concentration being more than 20 mg/m<^>3, dust respirators make it possible to provide only moderate degree of occupational disease risk. In this context, there is an excess in under-mask dust concentration in a respirator up to 18 %, in terms of 2 mg/m<^>3 MAC. It is noted that if respirators are not worn or if they are taken off for more than five minutes during the operating shift in terms of constant dustiness, it results in the increase in under-mask dust concentration by almost three times. Originality. Originality is in scientific substantiation of the safe dust concentration, when it is possible to provide minimum pneumonoconiosis risk while using a filtering respirator. Practical value. Certain measures to reduce the level of pneumonoconiosis risk have been proposed. Increase in the protection efficiency for miners is possible owing to the intensification of the control of individual dust load which will be evaluated taking into consideration real time of respirator use and changes in dust concentration within the working zone. It is recommended to use of electronic monitoring means developed on the basis of pressure sensors, power units, control units, information process units, alarm blocks, and block for data record and storage.

Purpose. To determine the dependence between the design parameters (diameter and height) of a filtering box, the gas filter resistance and the protective power time. Methodology. The calculation results of the filter sorption capacity for the specified organic compound are obtained involving classic statements of the theory of monomolecular adsorption. Experimental studies of gas filters were carried out according to DSTU EN 13274-3:2005 "Respiratory protective devices. Testing methods". Findings. It is shown that in terms of the similar sorbent volume and dimensions of the outlet of a filtering box with the exhale valve, the increasing filter area reduces considerably the breathing resistance; however, that results in the reduced protective time of a gas respirator. It has been determined that in this case an increased filter area causes nonuniform distribution of the filtration rate over the filter area and, as a result, nonuniform use of the filter sections. A section in front of the outlet experiences the greatest load in terms of sorption of the harmful gases. Originality. It has been specified that the increase in the outlet diameter relative to the filter diameter prolongs the protective time of a filter in terms of the same sorbent volume. Practical value. Dimensions of a filtering box have been identified to provide uniform use of the sorbent and maximum protective time.

Purpose. To develop a model of the integrated system for company management, basing on the integration of the quality control and labour safety systems that differs from the known ones by combination of the processes based on the increase in the level of corporate safety cultures within a company. Methodology. Formation of the basis for integration of the quality control and labour safety systems relies on the complex use of system analysis methods that, in combination with Deming and Shewhart cycle and with the performance of corresponding estimation and analysis of the organizational and safety cultures, help plan the practices, procedures, and resources for stage-by-stage combination of the systems as well as maintain the obtained results. Findings. An approach for efficient development of the integrated management system has been proposed on the basis of the analysis of levels of organizational and safety cultures; in future, this will help select such tools and practices that will allow having painless stage-by-stage combination of the available systems of quality control and labour safety with the substantiation of the necessary recourses. It has been established that a key element of the combination is readiness and motivation of not only top management but also linear management and ordinary workers to accept new technologies, approaches, and practices aimed at integration of those cultures, which is provided by the efficient staff involvement by means of corresponding training and constant communication to form the risk-oriented thinking. Originality. A structure and model of the integrated system of quality and safety management as a unified interdependent mechanism have been proposed on the basis of the combination of organizational and safety cultures; that has allowed forming the unified principles for the development of a combined management system. Practical value. The control parameters have been determined to identify stages of integration of the quality control and labour safety systems basing on the attitude to values and formed worldview as well as on the gaining the necessary competences by the workers.

Purpose. To determine magnitudes of the occupational risks of respiratory disease (pneumoconiosis) occurrence in miners while using filter respirators on the basis of an exposure dust dose with the consideration of work experience. Methodology. To assess occupational risks, a new approach proposed by the Research Institute of Complex Hygiene and Occupational Diseases is used. The approach is based on determining an exposure dose of a hazardous substance entering the worker's lungs during their professional contact with it taking into account the volume of pulmonary ventilation, the number of shifts, and work experience. Findings. Use of dust respirators reduces the risk of occupational respiratory diseases but does not eliminate it completely. It has been established that with more than three-year work experience and coal dust concentrations of more than 50 mg/m<^>3, use of dust filter respirators does not ensure a minimal degree of the occupational disease risks. At the same time, it has been identified that if work experience is less than 3 years with the use of filter respirators, the risk of occupational diseases will be minimal. It has been proved that the risk assessment should involve using the minimal value of a protection factor of a respirator, which is fixed in the production environment. It has been shown that working within the areas with dust concentrations higher than 100 mg/m<^>3 is dangerous for miners; over time, with the accumulation of sufficient dust in the lungs it will lead to the development of silicosis. Originality. It consists in scientific substantiation of the magnitude of occupational risk of respiratory diseases in miners, taking into account a real protection factor of respirators, which is determined at the workplace based on the calculation of an exposure dose and time of professional contact with hazardous substances. Practical value. The experience of safe operation in mine workings with and without using filter respirators has been substantiated, basing on a safe value of coal dust concentration, at which a low level of occupational risk of respiratory diseases is recorded. Recommendations for determining the dust load taking into account a protection factor of respirators at the workplace have been developed.
